Whenever I go on long trips, I always carry a deck of cards, a drawing pad and pencils, and a nice book. With these three simple sets of items, I'm ready for any kind of journey. If I'm on my own, and the scenery is boring, I pull out the book. A good book can keep me busy for days at a time. If the scenery starts to get interesting, or I'm sharing a compartment with someone or something that looks rather interesting, then the drawing pad and pencils come out. I love sketching, and a train trip is an absolutely golden opportunity to get inspiration for sketching. The deck of cards is my favorite of the items I travel with. If I happen to meet someone, and we get to talking, I know many card games that can be played with a normal deck of playing cards (some of my own invention). I know card games that work with groups of people as large as 24, and I know some that work perfectly well with 2, and all player numbers between. I know games that rely on speed, some on memory, some on luck, and some on imagination. Regardless of the type of person or people I meet, a deck of playing cards can act as that perfect ice breaker.
