Week Three - Task #07. - “Brighter the Light”

Postby Prof. Sindor Aloyarc » Sun Apr 16, 2023 10:55 am

“Business?” You ask, perplexed and slightly annoyed, as the cat dematerializes once more, but this time doesn’t return.

“Yes,” the knave pulls a scroll from a completely different concealed pocket. “Your world and ours are linked. Where your friend’s muffins have gone missing, her counterpart here, the queen, has had her tarts stolen.”

As this moment you realize who the knave resembles. Queenie’s friend Jack who was supposed to return with the muffins.

Unfolding the scroll, he tells you, “It’s in everyone’s best interest to work together to solve this case for all our sakes, but we’ll have to test your Muchness before officially offering you the position, of course.”

“…Position??”

His jaw sets, along with a scowl, “One might think you’d knever been called forth to take part in the hearings of testimony at a royal court before.”

At this completely accurate remark, you choose to stay silent, allowing him to take the lead on whatever happens next. If you want to make it back to the party, it seems the only way out of this nonsense is to find your way through it.

The Knave of Hearts clears his throat before carrying on.

“In order to be approved, you’ll have to pass a Lightness-test of intelligence, in addition to a Darkness-test of honor.”

Snapping his fingers, two identical figures appear in the shadows. Their eyes glow much brighter in the darkness than the knave’s, which is relatively unnerving (and they’re in the middle of an argument), but as they reach you they each offer a hand to shake, along with a “How do you do?”

You have so many questions, but it doesn’t seem prudent to ask any of them at this point.

Their politeness wins you over from how creepy this all is, and before you know it, they’re pelting you with questions, saying you must proceed hastily or you’ll be “Late for the oysters.”

Something about them reminds you of your friends Deeandra and Dumeah back home. They can never seem to agree on anything, and are fairly ferocious when battling against each other, yet are impeccably well mannered with everybody else.

Trying to maintain a smile, you wonder what the big deal about these muffins ever was in the first place?
