Week Three - Task #08. - “Darker the Shadow”

Postby Prof. Sindor Aloyarc » Sun Apr 16, 2023 10:55 am

Passing the first test went smoother than expected, but it’s the second test that has you concerned. The twins keep giving each other sideways glances and sneaky smiles whenever the knave brings it up.

“There’s a knight knearby who will help administer the following test,” the knave says, unimpressed by your success. “In addition to taking knotes, he’s there for your protection,”

Goodness, you think, gulping away the lump in your throat.

“The Tweedles will bring you to him. I’ll be waiting on the other side.”

You scarcely have time to wonder what he’ll be meeting you on the other side of, when the twins grab hold of either side of your arms, literally lifting you an inch off the ground as they sprint you out of a large, black door into another room.

This room has an odd sound, like lots of little clicks happening at once, and is more like a long hallway with no visible ending. It has a multitude of thick, differently shaped pillars along the way, and is only marginally brighter than where they’ve just pulled you out of.

You look up to locate where the minimal amount of light is coming from (still in the grips of the twins and their dashing velocity), then let out a tiny gasp.

What you thought were marble pillars aren't pillars at all, but trees! Marble trees, with marble leaves rustling and clinking together.

Taking a look back from where you’re speedily departing, you see the door you’ve exited from is built into one of the thickest trees in the bunch, and the door is slowly closing as you’re hauled further away down the lane.

With your eyes still turned back, the twins come to a jarring halt that has you stumble to your feet.

Facing forward again, you register that you’re standing in front of a statue shaped like an enormous chess piece. Specifically, the white knight.

You’re about to comment on what an impressive piece of work it is, when the mouth of the horse opens and bleats out, “It’s about time.”

Too stunned to respond (not that the others care) you’re told by the knight that it’ll be following you across the rest of the marble forest.

“In a test of character,” the marble steed explains, plainly expecting you to follow as it continues down the path, “You will make your way out of these woods.”

There’s a springy boing-boing-boinging sound as the twins bounce back in the opposite direction, leaving you to either chase after them, or follow the knight.

“Full steam ahead,” you sigh, catching up with your alleged protector, wondering what exactly you’ll be needing protection from.

The white knight whinnies as if laughing to itself.

“Along with the Jabberwocky being on the loose, you may also come across the Queen’s Bandersnatch. I’ll be able to keep you safe from any permanent damage, however will be keeping to the shadows while observing your progress.”

You’re told you’ll have to be on the lookout yourself for any minor mishaps and dangers that occur, and that part of this test will be how you rise to meet these obstacles, as well as interact with any creatures along the way

“Take this,” you hear, as the knight comes to a stop and a small, ivory colored book slides down its back into your hands. “It’ll come in handy when trying to communicate with anyone while you’re still in these lands.”

Opening the book, you’re amused when it’s filled with definitions for a wide range of silly, nonsensical sounding words.

“Oh, what fun this will be,” you say dryly, only to look up and see the knight is no longer visible, having hidden himself amongst the trees.

I wish people would stop appearing and disappearing at random without warning, you pout while passing a sign that warns Don’t step on the Mome Raths.

It’s really just ever so rude.

Task:
Use the following Wordsearch to pass the second Muchness test by studying any nonsense words you’ll need to help communicate with the creatures you find along the marble woods, then Send Me Your Solution through a private message! 1 bean per word found. This task will be considered ‘complete’ after 7 words have been correctly turned in.
