Week 5 - Fashion

Postby Prof. Kendra Givens » Mon Aug 06, 2018 9:29 pm

Fashion has always been a part of society, and ancient Rome was no exception. Especially where hairstyles were concerned. Share a picture, or describe in words, either an outfit or hairstyle you would have worn if you lived in Roman times. If you choose to write, please make sure your description is at least 150 words.

Post your creation below to get a piece of this week’s password for the Treasure Hunt, and, of course, earn yourself 10 beans (+5 beans if it is handed in before the 12th of August). If you would rather not share your creation below, please send it to ravenclawevent @ gmail.com (no spaces) with the title "Week 5 - Fashion" and we will be sure to get you some beans!

Fabrics of garb are of linen and of silk. Hair is long and curly, some of it caught up on top but most of it just long and flowing. Garb is flowing and non-binding (for a hot climate) and layered (again for a hot climate). Leather sandals. A touch of gold and garnets at earrings and gold necklace.

Living in Rome would be really amazing; I would wear something normal like toga and tunica. These two were worn by most of the Roman men. The tunic is an undergarment which is put on, then the toga is considered an outer garment which is wrapped around. The original style of the tunic reached to the knees and had short sleeves. I would love to have this style, because later style accepted tunic's which were much longer. It is easier to walk in shorter tunic. Then I would also wear red cloak if needed in bad weather.
My clothes would be from good materials. Tunica would be made from wool, like it was for most of the Roman men. The material to make a toga would be of a single broad piece of woollen cloth of a shape similar to a semicircle. I would also use elegant belt for tunica.

Since I'm a warrior I would probably be wearing a tunic that was only a bit pass my knees. Other men would wear longer tunics. I also would be wearing a lot of armor to protect me. One part of this armor would be my helmet, so that my head would be protected in case someone tried to land a blow there. I would also be wearing a segmented chest plate to protect me in case I got stabbed. Of course for my feet I'd be wearing sandals, which were called Caligae back then. These sandals were worn by men on and off the battle field. Lastly, I'd need a weapon or two and a shield so that I could fight. My weapon of chose would be a long sword, because I like hand to hand battles, and a dagger would feel much to short for me. Although, a small sword like a legionary sword would come in hand sometimes.

I would probably wear a tunic of very pale blue linin and of a very simple cut. It would reach down to ankle level and, as was the fashion, have no sleeves. I might wear an embroidered belt in a darker blue and a shawl in cream linin over the top. Sandals are obviously a must as they were the chief foot-ware of the day: I would wear delicate ones in dark leather. Jewellery wise, I would go for a necklace made up of the arching bodies of two dolphins in cleverly fashioned gold, overlapping so that they formed a ring (with their tails at the back of the neck). My hair would be caught up with fairly simple bronze combs. I would also wear a signet ring so that I could sign my correspondence with my own personalised wax seal: the ring would contain a piece of bright blue lapis with the image of a stalking lioness carved into its face.
