Task 4 - Writing

Postby Chantel Poole » Wed Jan 11, 2023 7:59 pm

Writing Time!

It’s taking way longer than he originally thought to raise the Magic Meter enough to get back to the North Pole. To help pass the time, Gary thinks it would be fun to come up with a poem.

Task:
To give him a hand, write out a poem with a theme surrounding the New Year, Holidays, or even Winter! Make sure your poem is at least 100 words, but you may use any format you would like.

Post your poem below by January 31st at 11:59pm HOL time to earn 10 beans.

Winter Things

I’m not good at poems.
I’m not good with words.
But that doesn’t matter when winter comes
Because with it comes snow
And I hate that stuff.
All that cold and wet fluff.

Winter brings snow and winter brings cold.
But another thing winter brings
Is the New Year stuff.

The joy of making it another year,
The freedom of starting anew.
Most people makes resolutions,
Most just make do.

This poem doesn’t have good flow
Nor is it the best.
But winter is good for a few things
And New Year’s Day is above the rest.

This poem sometimes rhymes.
Doesn't make any sense.
But that’s a joy of winter to me.
As long as you’re well and happy,
Who cares?

Whose fireworks is that? I think I know.
Its owner is quite happy though.
Full of joy like a vivid rainbow,
I watch him laugh. I cry hello.

He gives his fireworks a shake,
And laughs until her belly aches.
The only other sound's the break,
Of distant waves and birds awake.

The fireworks is magical, loud and deep,
But he has promises to keep,
After cake and lots of sleep.
Sweet dreams come to him cheap.

He rises from his gentle bed,
With thoughts of kittens in his head,
He eats his jam with lots of bread.
Ready for the day ahead.

New Year could not stop thinking about the New Year
It was just so colourful and loud
But she could never forget the steer

That morning, New Year encountered a New Year so sheer
She had to calm herself with a cloud
New Year couldn't stop thinking about the New Year

Later, New Year was spooked by a career
She tried to focus on an aloud
But she could never forget the steer

Fireworks said, the New Year wasn't that clear
Said it was time to start thinking about a crowd
New Year couldn't stop thinking about the New Year

Goodbye twenty twenty two
We remember when you were new.
But now we're glad that you are through
Celebrating our goodbyes is what we do.

You came in with such good hope,
but would it be realiized? Nope!
You're too much like what came before
So now we get to show you the door.

Hello twenty twenty three
From last year, you'll let us free.
We don't know yet what you will be
But please say you'll be good for me!

Just like each preceding year
You have twelve months with us here.
To all of us from far and near,
We hope you'll be without peer!

Christmas

Cookies of all kinds, fresh from the ovens, a few on a plate for Santa
Hot chocolate with small white marshmallows floating on top of steamy liquid
Reindeer flying through the snowy skies, a red nosed one leading the way
Icicle lights framing the house, glowing bright on a dark starry night
Snowmen standing guard outside each house watching the skies for a familiar sight
Trees of green in the fields waiting to be brought home to be decorated with ornaments of silver and gold
Memories in the making to look back on in years to come
Anticipation, little ones trying to stay awake to see if Santa will really arrive
Santa finally arrives, dressed in red and white, sliding down the chimney with presents for all the good boy and girls.

Looking Back

The time has come to say farewell
With fireworks and jingle bells
The old year ends, the new comes in
With looking back to where we’ve been.

Promises broken, promises kept
Days gone by, but memories left
Disappointments, triumphs, hopes, and sorrows
All our yesterdays, todays, tomorrows.

Welcome New Year, goodbye old!
Wrapped in silver, red, and gold.
Bright flares light up darkest night,
Countdown starts, the world is right.

And so the new year now begins
Time to celebrate with friends.
Excited cheers, good wishes given
The troubles of last year forgiven.

So let us celebrate at last
Goodbye to 2022-the past.
People celebrate both far and near
Good wishes all, until next year.

My creative writing skills are lacking and I'm hungry, so I apologize in advance - I present to you an octet of haikus:

Gary the Penguin
Somehow got lost in the snow
Stuck in the South Pole

Going to the North Pole
He is far away from home
How does he get there?

Missing family
An adventure awaits him
It will get him home

Where does he go next?
Gary is feeling hungry
His nose leads the way

Gary smells curry
Delicious Thai coconut
Take a break to eat

Then he smells gyro
Yummy lamb and tzatziki
Do penguins eat this?

Smells of pelmeni
Homey meaty pastry soup
He is almost home!

His favorite fish!
Arctic char is for dinner
North Pole home sweet home!

Hope is in the air tonight,
Fireworks light up the night.
Twenty twenty-two we grieve,
For tonight is New Year’s Eve.

Christmastime has come and gone,
A new year comes with the dawn.
We all turn over new leaves,
For tonight is New Year’s Eve.

Resolutions we all make,
Old habits we try to shake.
A new start we all believe,
For tonight is New Year’s Eve.

Parties rage around the world,
People dance, and spin, and whirl.
Happiness we all perceive,
For tonight is New Year’s Eve.

Gathered ‘round old friends and new,
Fireworks are in full view.
Welcome twenty twenty-three,
For tonight is New Year’s Eve!

It's been quite the year
With seasons gone and near
Spring, summer, fall and winter
The snow has all but gone
From white to green in one

A new year has come
A new year has begun
Sunday through to next
What much is there to say
But to start with a new day

Snow fights and christmas trees
Holidays and yummy feasts
Penguins and bears
Friends aren’t in a hurry
But rather cute and furry

Not much more is there to say
We are on the suns last ray
Rhyming isn’t fun
Gary friend assist me
Words seem to fail the

Garry's quick adventure has ended up being more than he bargained for.
He's borrowed his dad's sleigh to have some fun.
But now he is on the run.
He must make it back in time.
So that his adventure is not a crime.
If he hurries
If he scurries
Maybe no one with notice that he was ever missing
If his dad finds out he has left
he will be stuck at home for ever
doing chores in the snow
with now more adventures in sight
that would be quite a fright for a young penguin boy
he would have any joy.

DISCLAIMER: My poetry tends to usually be on the melancholic / sad side of the spectrum, at least at first sight. I apologise in advance!

Nightfall

I see the sky burn alight,
The midnight seen so crisp and clear
Snowflakes fall throughout the night
The air is cold, the frost is here.

With my head looking up above
I see the puffs of my deep breath
Alone I feel, no trace of love
I glance around at nature's death.

Why does the wind cut so deep,
Exposing my bare soul to the outside?
The things I've done, now I must reap,
The responsibility in how my garden dried.

New.

The way destruction begets creation.

New.

The pain preceding a full gestation.

There's no change without destruction,
No progress without backtracing
In a life without instruction
My foul deeds demand erasing.

I look back, and sit, and ponder,
Knowing no winter is forever,
But my acts, more than my wonder,
The coldness of who I was, they sever.

Tick Tick Tick
The time is ticking by
Aboard the Magical Sleigh
Flying quickly across the sky

Home is where the heart is
Or that’s what they like to say
I hope to back to the North Pole
Within one short quick day

Winter means Christmas and New Year,
The time I enjoy and love the most
The North gets more snow and cold
And I feel like the host

Tinsel, Fairy lights and decorations everywhere
The most celebratory time of the year
Lots of fun had by everyone
It’s why we should all cheer

I feel like I’m done with this poem
It definitely wasn’t my best
At least it passed some of the time
But now it’s time to rest

Holding hands with near-strangers you've only just met
Auld Lang Syne pouring from mouths as old aquaintance we forget
People laughing, cheering and shouting for more
Privately wondering what the new year has in store
Yesterday was last week, last month and last year
Now is the time, as your future grows near
Every face painted with happiness and content
Whilst drinks keep on flowing at the year's first event
You make resolutions you'll undoubtedly fail
Even though in this moment, you swear you'll prevail
At least you know for this time, surrounded by friends
Right now is just perfect, no one wants it to end
