Week Three - Task #15. “Returning”

Postby Anne-Marie Gagne » Sat Nov 15, 2025 12:37 am

You are running again. But it’s different this time. Not fleeing, not chasing. Just… returning. The way smoke returns to air or leaves return to earth.

The house appears through the fog, familiar and strange. The pumpkins still gleam, but now they feel less watchful and more welcoming.

You step beneath the tree, Pipkin at your side.

No one feels the need to speak. Something inside you aches, but it isn’t with sadness. It’s with knowing.

You’ve changed. All of you have. You’ve seen how death is not the opposite of life, it’s part of it. You’ve carried names, lit candles, drawn breath where others could not.

And now it is time to rest.

One final pumpkin glows overhead.

You look up, and it appears as if it’s chuckling.

I have so many favorite things about Autumn. I absolutely love the weather that comes with the season. Usually not too hot but not too cold, and even if it is one way or the other, the wind can cool you or the sun can warm you. The changing color of leaves is also one of my favorite things, and I find it to be gorgeous scenery. A lot of my favorite holidays occur in Autumn, like Halloween and Thanksgiving, which lets me spend some time with family I don't see throughout the year. Autumn is the season of pumpkin spice everything, from candles, beverages, perfumes, and more, and while I don't like the taste of most things pumpkin, I love the smell. Overall, it's the season that appeals to almost every one of my senses.

Hello,

I have one absolute favorite thing about Autumn (even though it's been forever since I haven't seen this season), and it is walks in the park when the trees are flaming orange, yellow, and bright red. I love to hear the soft crunch of the dead leaves under my feet, and it's so satisfying to hear it (unless it became damp and doesn't have the crackly noise anymore)! The park where I used to live was picturesque, especially in Autumn! The trees always reminded me of orange-flavored lollipops! Last but not least, we were allowed to make huge piles of leaves and dive in it! I was a very professional leaf pile diver, according to my parents!

I love walking outside when the air is cool and the leaves crinkle under my shoes (though it can be quite dangerous if it's wet!). The tree leaves turn soft shades of yellow, copper, and deep red, and the air carries that fresh, cold scent that tells you winter is not far away.

I enjoy drinking hot tea and hot chocolate in the evening and watching the wind move the branches outside the window. I also enjoy simple autumn foods that seem to come with the season, like fresh bread, apples, and apple pies, and warm soups that really hit with the chilly air.

It's also when the season of winter sports starts, and I love to watch them!
