Making your way to your feet, a creaky and mysterious voice asks “Are you alright?”
Startled, you leap behind a stone. “Who’s there?” you quiver.
Then another gravelly voice, “Don’t frighten the child.”
Eyes dart back and forth, searching for the owners of these words as you creep your head around and a third person pipes up right next to your ear, “Yes, do not be afraid, my dear!”
You shriek, leaping away from the rock you’ve been hiding behind. Staggering a few feet back, squinting in the moonlight, you realize this isn’t an ordinary piece of the mountain after all.
“Gargoyles!”
Walking around to each in turn, you regain your confidence and calm as they tell you their story.
Years ago, when the Ring of Kings was stolen, the Master of the Mountain in his fury had turned the three of these brothers into gargoyles, commanding them to guard the summit, keeping any and all visitors away from hunting for the ring themselves.
There was even a fourth brother, Gog, who went missing at the same time, never having been seen again.
