Gliding ever so gracefully down and settling more smoothly on the ground than you’d have anticipated, you’re dazzled by an assortment of items glowing fiery red in the darkness.

A unicycle is whirling in a loop above your head, its movements accompanied by a book lamp, a rotary phone, various bird cages, and a variety of other random objects.

Apart from the dim illumination from this source, the darkness is overwhelming, so you move ahead cautiously.

As you navigate the area, you take note of numerous more objects scattered on the floor. Among them is a crimson refrigerator, a scarlet grandfather clock, and a ruby throne. You take care not to disturb any of the stacks of folded red garments piled high around you.

“Careful,” a low, rumbling voice comes out of the gloom as you’re about to pick up a vase filled with fake, bejeweled flowers. “She won’t like that.”

Swiveling around to face where the voice is coming from, you hear your own voice trembling with anxiety.

“She? Who’s she?” You ask. “And who are you?”

Stepping into the faint glow enough to see their face, you discover the voice belongs to a man in the most regal clothing you’ve ever seen. He has a pointed beard and mustache, and his garb is discreetly decorated all over with little hearts and the letter K.

“You’re the Knave of Hearts!” You exclaim.

The man’s eyes narrow.

“How knice of you to knotice,” he says, pulling one side of his mustache through his fingers. “But I prefer to be referred to as the Knave,” he stresses the usually silent letter, adding them elsewhere they don’t belong. “I’m here on behalf of the Queen to escort whoever is meant to turn up today.” His eyes draw down to your shoes, then back to your face.

“Apologies,” you offer a slight bow. “I didn’t… I didn’t know.” A pause occurs as you consider whether or not you should be taking part in this strange K situation apart from using the correct pronunciation for his title.

The knave pulls a knife out of some hidden pocket, then a raspberry scone from another. The third and final pocket he rummages into produces a jar of orange marmalade, which he opens, using the knife to spread a messy mound of marmalade over the scone before taking a bite. Sticky orange residue is left clinging to his whiskers.

Knot knearly even as sharp as this knife, are you?” He chews while he speaks, crumbs dribbling out of his mouth with each syllable. “Anyone who finds themselves here ought to know that by know.”

That pesky cat! Surely it could have mentioned this, saving you from an awkward moment.

“How did you possibly manage getting here?”

From behind the knave's right side, a mischievous smirk from the cat pops up.

“The cat!” You shout, pointing.

He peers over that shoulder just as the cat vanishes. Its head appears on the other side, though its face seems to have changed.

“No, there!” You point again.

The farce continues as the cat disappears and turns up somewhere else with a different face, frolicking around cheerfully, evidently entertained by how frustrated you both become.

"Enough of this charade,” the knave declares wolfishly, brushing crumbs away from his chest. “We have business to attend to.”
