Finally out of the wood you come upon a small cabin, walking around each corner in search of a door, but there isn't one.
“How does anyone get inside?”
A large set of eyes appears in one of the windows as a frog-like voice says “Down the chimney, of course!”
A ladder is propped up against one side of the building, allowing you to make your way up to the roof. There’s a rope hanging down the wide chimney which you grasp hold of to support your descent.
Inside, you look around the open space expecting the person whose voice you just heard, but nobody’s there.
Not much to look at, the room has no furniture or pictures on the walls. Some plants have been placed here and there, but what has your attention is a deep pool of water set into the floor, lily pads scattered across its surface.
“Hello?” you call out, “Is anybody there?”
“Here I am,” the voice says, and you’re startled to see it belongs to a large frog sitting on the edge of the pool.
He introduces himself as Old Croak, and you spend the next couple hours learning more about the mountain and its inhabitants.
One of the more fascinating pieces of information you’re offered is about this “Lithy Pool” set in the ground, which people believe has magical properties and is said to be where the ring of kings is hidden.
“Silly rumor,” Old Croak ribbits, his tongue flicking out to grab a small fly above his head.
The time slips away quickly as you ask the frog a stream of questions. Curious when he talks about never leaving his cabin because of a powerful witch who keeps watch over the mountain at night.
“She’s notoriously afraid to get near the Lithy Pool due to a legend which states nothing evil can survive a dip in its waters. And one more thing before you go,” he chokes out hurriedly, noticing you start to ready yourself for the next part of your journey. “I’m not really a frog.”
The poor little thing admits that he can’t remember who he once was. With every passing year his memory slips further away, leaving him that much more afraid to venture out into the world and away from the security of his pool.
“Help us, if you can,” he says sweetly. “And, please … do be careful.”Task:
