Task 5: Divining the Details

Postby Kendra Givens » Mon Sep 13, 2021 11:06 pm

We're all familiar with the titles of Lockhart's most popular novels. But what are they actually about? What specific stories does he tell? Write an excerpt from one of his novels, in 100 words or more, and post it below to earn yourself 10 beans. Be sure to tell us what novel you're referring to! All task submissions are due by October 3rd at 11:59pm HOL time.

Below is an excerpt from Voyages With Vampires:

“Today we trekked further into the Carpathian Mountains on our way to the Great Castle, once inhabited by Vlad Drakul himself. You, dear reader, probably know him best by the moniker of Dracula, but I have had the great fortune in knowing the man himself, who assured me that he much preferred the use of his own name. Of course, to those of us who he considers his dearest friends, he will forever be Colti (Fang for you non-Romanian speakers).

The youngest of the vampires in our little band grew terribly frightened at the wolf howls as we moved further into the forest. I hastened to assure him that there was no need for concern, I am an expert in controlling the foul beasts. With a simple wave of my wand and a whispered ancient command, I bid them silence and they had no choice but to obey. It’s a very fortunate thing for them that I was there or it could have been disaster.

We decided to take shelter and will continue our journey tomorrow at daybreak. The storm raging overhead does not concern me at all, because I have the ability to bend the weather to my will. I have not truly decided if I will share this secret with my vampiric brothers, as I do not believe they have the superior mental capacity for such things as do I. Perhaps it would be much better to keep such knowledge to myself. I taught Colti the meaning of prudence and I shall heed my own wise counsel. Journey’s end is near and no use to upset the natural order of things now. I shall continue my account tomorrow; now it is time to rest.”

This brief bit may be found in the famous Gilderoy Lockhart book Break with a Banshee.

In the morning, after morning ablutions, we did our regular ritual of checking the noise deflectors, tuning forks and ear plugs. Banshees are strange creatures, and very dangerous. If worse came to worse, we could simply travel with the plugs in our ears all the time but the difficulty with that was the obvious: we'd be unable to hear the approach of other creatures who might be rather dangerous, such as the Catty-eyed Womthurgis or Thwompers. (Creatures such as those give very little warning of their approach, and usually the first a person knows about them is when one of their number screeches as they are caught up and run away with to be devoured elsewhere.) So having ear plugs with us, while a useful device against being caught up by a banshee or subjected to their wiles, had some particular detrimental side-effects.

This is from a book called 'Year with the Yeti'.

I was definitively not scared. That is one thing I have never ever been. The idea of being scared is so foreign to me that I find it hilarious when others are experiencing this feeling. I, however, continued my journey up the hill despite the cold winds hitting my body. They were trying to stop me but I was not giving up.

As I was getting closer to the top of the hill, I realized that there was something wrong. As I looked around, I pulled my wand up and said loudly 'Whoever is this, better come out before I put a spell on you!'.

The following is an excerpt from the book entitled Gilderoy Lockhart's Guide to Household Pests.

Listen up, my dear readers! This book will allow you to rid your humble abode, or magnificent manor, of the common (and some not-so-common) household pests that may plague you. I, Gilderoy Lockhart, five-time winner of Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile, author extraordinaire, and recipient of the Order of Merlin Third Class, shall teach you all that you need to know! Whether struggling with a Doxy, Chizpurfle, Bundimun, Garden Gnome, or anything else, I've dealt with them many times over, and soon, you will too. Trust me when I say that dealing with these pests is no easy feat, but I will help you learn everything you need to know about them to get the upper hand and rid your house of them for good!

This short fragment can be found in the book 'Year with the Yeti'.

We sat down in his massive cage on the stools made out of ice. Yeti decided that tonight we need to add some proteins to our diets so he cooked a massive bull. He tried to use as much cooking skills as he had. It took him 40 minutes to prepare our dinner. The meal looked like a kebab with carrots, lettuce and tones of onions inside. He was so excited for me to taste the meal that he started jumping up and down by my chair.

Wandering with Werewolves

The moon rose, it’s glistening orb of white shimmering menacing against the dark Armenian night. The village people knew just as much as I that tonight the beast would transform, turning to terrorise the town with its mighty gnashing jaws and blood thirsty demon eyes.

Although I was here to rid this town of harm, I couldn’t help feeling deep down that I, Gilderoy Lockhart, would connect on a deeper spiritual level with the man crying out and trapped inside this monster. For he was taunted just as much as the towns people. I can only hope that my efforts lead to harmony between all magic and non-magic people…an ideal birthday gift if any.
