Week Four - Task #14. - “Thing of Evil”

Postby Prof. Sindor Aloyarc » Mon Oct 24, 2022 11:23 pm

“Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil!—prophet still, if bird or devil!—
Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted—
On this home by Horror haunted—tell me truly, I implore—
Is there—is there balm in Gilead?—tell me—tell me, I implore!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”

Task:
Contribute an original Poem in 75 words or more titled “Thing of Evil.”

Alternatively you may Confess a time you did something you feel was nasty, cruel, or wicked with the same word count expectations. Keeping it HOL/family friendly as always, this can be a relatively minor act, or something that had a big impact on those around you. When might you have looked back and found your own behavior to have toed the line between good and evil? Perhaps even crossed it! Do you wish you had handled it differently, or would you change your actions in the future?

This task is worth 15 beans, with an additional 15 bonus beans for completing all Week Four tasks by end of activity. Deadline is 11:59pm (HOL time) on Halloween, Monday October 31st.

Thing of Evil

I see an object up ahead
Which I cannot resist.
So I step closer, instead:
"Take me", I feel it insist.

Out of curiosity I do just that
Though I have no idea what it is.
I pick it up (its shape is flat)
And my head starts to whizz.

More and more uncomfortable I get
With my head spinning round and round.
Unable to drop it, I start to fret
And then I exclaim "Zounds!"

As fast as I can, I run away
From the thing of evil I held.
Enough distance will make me safe today
From that thing of evil (I could have been felled)!

Thing of Evil

I see it, as it stares back at me.
It's eyes dark and black
filled with such hatred
such anger.

I watched it survey my movements,
laugh at my sadness,
and look at everything
with things under a dark
colored glass.

I didn't understand
what I had done,
what I had done to anger it so.
But there it moves, to the edge of sight
to the darkness again

And it blinked back at me
as I stood, it followed,
right to the front of the mirror.

One day at a Toy shop,
I met a man selling cats,
For money he wanted to swap,
But I really wanted some rats.

"Got any rats?" asked I.
"For that's how I'll spend my money."
"No rats here!" said the guy.
He seemed to find it quite funny.

"We've got some lovely fish,
I'll give you a very fine price."
"I'd rather have some gish."
The man blinked rapidly thrice.

The man seemed exceptionally evil,
And his manner was strangely amused.
He wasn't what I would call medieval,
Great disdain he noticeably oozed.

Like others, he thought I was odd,
Some say I'm a bit terrible.
Still he gave me a courteous nod,
As if he thought I was plenty repairable.

So in search of my goal I departed,
But before the Toy shop could I leave,
The man came running full-hearted,
"I can help you I believe."

"Cats, rats, you shall find.
Fish, gish, you can get.
You must now open your mind,
And get down to London Market.

So to London Market I decided to go,
In search of the rats I craved.
The winds it did eerily blow.
But I felt that the day could be saved.

There were stalls selling rings,
Fruits in many shades.
There were even stalls selling wings
People were scattered from many trades

I was greeted by a peculiar lady,
She seemed to be rather terrible
I couldn't help thinking she might be quite shady.
I wondered if she was at all repairable.

Before I could open my mouth,
She shouted, "For you, I have some rats!"
I headed towards her, to the south,
Past some fish and cats.

"But how did you know?" I asked,
"Do you want them or not?" she did say.
Silently, the rats she passed.
Then vanished before I could pay.

As I walked away I hard a crackle
Or was it, perhaps, a hushed cackle?

Thing couldn't stop thinking about the thing
It was just so scary and evil
But he could never forget the bing

That morning, Thing was shocked by the ring
He had to calm himself with an upheaval
Thing couldn't stop thinking about the thing

Later, Thing was spooked by a wing
He tried to focus on a cheval
But he could never forget the bing

Pain tried to distract him with ling
Said it was time to start thinking about a knievel
Thing couldn't stop thinking about the thing

Thing took action like a king
The thing was like a toxic leavell
But he could never forget the bing

Thing nosedived like a dirty everything
His mind became dangerously medieval
Thing couldn't stop thinking about the thing
But he could never forget the bing

A shade, a spirit, a demon, or such,
Was sealed deep in a tomb,
By Emperors, Kings, and Princes,
Long since forgotten by time,
But over the years,
It has grown and gained strength,
Plotted a way out of its prison,
Biding its time until the hour is right,
To take revenge on the powers of the world.

It has planned how to best disrupt their regimes,
And take away their control,
So it starts to break free and laughs with delight,
As it once again steps into the open air,
But glee turns to shock,
As its plans crumble to dust,
For the world is much changed,
The time of Emperors and Kings is gone,
And the people have the power once more.
