Week Three - Task #12. - “It’s Going to be a Bumpy Ride”

Postby Prof. Alexander Brighton » Sat Mar 16, 2024 11:05 am

You get a notice by Owl to let you know that you will be meeting in the Greenhouses for your practice duel. You think it’s a peculiar place to have a duel, but very interesting indeed. The notice also asks for any budding duelists to come that afternoon to help clear a space to practice. It is also a chance to practice spellcasting before the actual practice.

You show up in the Greenhouses right after your last class and before supper. You are given the task of removing flower pots, plants, and tables using magic only so you don't get too close to the dangerous plants. You use the spells that you already know well, like Wingardium Leviosa to move things out of the way. Once the space is clear, you leave to have a bite to eat.

You return to the greenhouses by 8:00. You find out that you will be having your practice duel in Greenhouse 3. There are other duels going on in the other greenhouses.

Prof. Alex first has your opponent cast a simple offensive spell. He teaches you how to cast “Protego” to protect yourself from many of these type of spells. After a few minutes, your opponent casts a spell to summon a rain cloud over top of you then it begins to rain. Prof. Alex teaches you about the general counter charm, Finite Incantatem, to deal with ongoing spells such as that. It takes just a couple tries to get the wand movement and incantation right, but it stops raining. You are proud of yourself even though you are a bit on the damp side now.

You are able to cast Protego and Finite Incantatem perfectly now, so it is time to move on to an offensive spell.

Prof. Alex teaches how to cast Rictumsempra. You have some fun casting this on your opponent, probably too much fun. You think Rictumsempra might even become your favorite spell to cast during a duel.

After class, Prof. Alex confronts you. He is very impressed at how quickly you caught on, so he gives you a challenge. He tells you about a secret passage that leads back to your common room. This passage has many twists and turns. He tells you to take the secret passage and he will also be in there. The idea is to make it quickly and safely through this secret passage without being spotted by him. If he spots you then you must use the spells that you have learned today to protect yourself. If you reach a dead end, there’s a chance he will find you. If you go all the way through without running into a wall, the chances are you won’t be caught. Are you up to the challenge?

Task:
Complete this maze to make it quickly and safely back to your common room.

Please send the completed maze in a PM to me and Prof. Sindor Aloyarc with the subject line "Week Three - Task #12 - It's going to be a bumpy ride"

Alternatively, write at least 150 words describing your actual practice duel. How did it go? Did you win, lose, or was it a draw? Give us some details about the duel including the spells you learned this week.

This will be worth 10 Beans/Sapphires and is due by March 30, 11:59 PM HOL Time.
